What is Beditation?
You know that moment when you are just waking up, yet somehow you are still asleep. For me, this is what happens just before I start a beditation, which is a meditation in bed. As you are waking up, your brain is in its alpha wave stage. Our brains follow the beta wave pattern while we are awake. As we transition between wakefulness and sleep we are in alpha. Theta waves occur in deep meditation. And, delta waves happen in deep sleep. So, it can be easier to find our way to a deeper meditation when we are already on the cusp of those alpha waves.

Everyone develops their own rituals for how things look for them. Some like to RPM, or Rise Pee Meditate, and others do this or that before they sit in stillness. For me, I like to move right into a meditation upon waking. My favorite is when I can wake up naturally with no where to go and nothing to do. That way, I can really let the meditation lead the way. I always start with a body scan while laying down based on the Silva Centering Exercise that I learned from Vishen Lakhiani. With the body scan, I cultivate awareness of each body part just like I mentioned in the last issue of Ramblings of an Infinite Soul. As I cultivate awareness, all of my cells begin to hum and find a Divine alignment with the Universe (Could there be a better beginning to the day?!).
That’s a great start, but there’s more!
Once I feel connected, I ask myself some Sacred Questions: Who Am I? What am I grateful for? What is my heart truly longing for? I may ask more if I am led to do so. My meditation teacher, davidji, introduced me to these questions and they really resonate with me, sparking a new conversation with each and every new day. Based on those answers, I invite an intention for my day. My daily intention is very intuitive and each day has its own need or desire.
From there, let’s take it just a little further…
Once I set the intention, I do some segment intending, as introduced to me by Abraham Hicks. Thinking about the next segment of the day, I envision the best experience of each piece of that segment. An example would be intending to feel the cool water awaken every cell of my skin as I splash water on my face when I get up (which makes it ever so much more likely that I will be present and truly enjoy the sensation of the water!). And finally, I set some markers for my day. For example: I will smile and laugh a lot today, I will shine my light brightly throughout the day, and I choose to see the beauty in each moment.

Um, Dawn, who has time for all that?!
Like I said, that would be an ideal situation. On a day where I need to get moving, I wake up by an alarm. I hit a ten minute snooze and move right into my body scan. Sometimes, I fall asleep (hence that beautiful snooze button!) and don’t even finish the scan. On those days, I express my gratitude for the few extra minutes of sleep and set the intention to pour love and compassion into myself for the day.
On other days, I get through every Sacred Question and the segment intending. Each day is different and positive in its own way. Honestly, I believe the decision to flow into the meditation to begin with has more benefits than you can possibly imagine. It is the moment that you choose to take time to breathe, to relish in the stillness before the buzz of the day, the moment you choose to hold this space to love yourself that you cultivate the changes that lead to transformation.

What are the benefits of beditation?
Meditating upon waking is a calm and beautiful way to start your day. The stillness and silence invite a clarity for the flow of the rest of the day. Within that clarity, I then know what I desire from my day: beauty, love, flow, and a plethora of other positive aspects. From there, I am so much more mindful as I step into the next moment, looking for those positive aspects and aware of who I am and what I need.
Another benefit is that, due to the alpha wave state in our transition to wakefulness, we are more apt to find it easier to begin our journey into meditation. If we are already meditators, then the beditation offers a simple step into the stillness and, perhaps, even a deeper meditation.

So give it a go!!
Can you spare just 10 minutes in the morning to gift yourself a beautiful start to your day? Try different things and see what works best for you. Maybe start with setting your alarm only five minutes earlier than yesterday (Or maybe even two or even one minute earlier!). In those few minutes, take a few deep breaths before getting out of bed. In the worst case scenario, you will fall back to sleep until your five minute (or less) snooze goes off. Best case? You give yourself five minutes of stillness and peace, connecting to your breath and your inner rhythm before your day truly begins.
Do you have other ways to cultivate peace and awareness in your mornings? Feel free to share in the Comments or on Facebook or Instagram! Thank you for sharing this time with me! May your day be filled with peace, love, and positivity.
